5th & 6th Grade Music Curriculum
During Fall music class, 5th and 6th grade students learn and become familiar with signaling, singing and signing the Kodaly hand signals for the major scale: DO, RE, MI, FA, SOL, LA and TI. This begins the study and discipline of solfeggio, singing from hand signals by sight, which is a skill students will continue to use as they move on to middle and high school in choir and other audition situations. They also learn mechanics of the human voice and how to produce a supported tone. 5th and 6th graders learn and practice diaphragmatic breathing, phrasing, and singing in ensemble and two parts as they work on repertoire for the Thanksgiving and winter concerts.
