Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service 2013

Our goal is to create a beloved community and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives.

~ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

What would Martin Luther King, Jr. think of our service? How are we, in our work and our relationships, not just on MLK day, but every day, building a beloved community?

On Monday, January 21, PMFS families will come together from 10am to 12pm to perform service in honor of the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We will be assembling healthy breakfast bags for families in need, this year deepening our partnership with ACLAMO in Norristown. ACLAMO Family Centers provide improved access to economic, educational, health, social and cultural opportunities for low-income Latino individuals and families in Montgomery County.

Our service activity this year is strengthened by the thoughtfulness and care of our students, who used Quaker-based decision-making processes to select the day’s activity. Students were asked, “How we can let the kids who receive our breakfast bags know that we care, not just on that day, but all year round?”

Through this process, the students are working to create a “beloved community” and so are we, as we stengthen our connection with ACLAMO throughout the year. Our pre-k students play together while ACLAMO moms join with PMFS moms to practice conversational English and build community. PMFS 4th graders have gone in small groups several times this year to play and sing with ACLAMO preschoolers. Several members of the PMFS faculty and staff are volunteering regularly to lead activities and assist with homework in ACLAMO's after school program and translated at Norristown School District’s parent-teacher conferences.

Our ongoing relationship benefits each of our communities in different ways. The relationship helps PMFS by extending our beloved community, connecting us and our children at a personal level with people of very different circumstances, exposing us to a growing immigrant population, and allowing us to explore commonalities and differences with others in our neighborhood.

Many thanks to parent Chris Babb and the PTO for their work organizing our day of service!
