Music in pre-k through primary – an overview

The music program for pre-k through primary grades strives to instill in our students the love of making music, creativity, exploration, and learning. We learn songs from a variety of musical and cultural traditions, as well as study the masters of classical music. Using the partnership of stories with classical music to introduce this genre to our young musicians, we study anything from the music of Prokofiev through Peter and the Wolf, to the music of Poulenc through the story of Babar the Little Elephant, to the story or Marian Anderson through recordings of her legendary singing. Our students learn about the fundamentals of music with note-reading, composition, improvisation through instrument play, and singing. Three times a year our students have an opportunity to perform for their families and peers in all-school performances for Thanksgiving, Winter Holidays, and Strawberry Festival.
