Visual Arts at Plymouth Meeting Friends School

At Plymouth Meeting Friends School, students are encouraged to develop and express their artistic abilities and share their thoughts and ideas. Art is also integrated with the school’s social studies program, and art projects are often developed to connect with thematic studies during the year.

Pre-k Art: Overview
The focus of art in pre-k is to nurture the inner artist of each child and introduce students to the materials, tools, and language of art. We work on strengthening their fine motor skills and encourage them to experiment and develop their creative thinking. We explore and experience different media – painting, sculpting, collage, clay, and printmaking – with the final product secondary to the process.

Primary through third grade art: Overview
The visual arts curriculum for primary through third grades covers the basic elements of color, design, texture, composition, form, space, and shape. This is done through a variety of media, including painting, collage, ceramics, murals, and sculpture.

Fourth through sixth grade art: Overview
In grades fourth through sixth, students continue what they have learned in the lower grades but with a more in-depth approach. Perspective, volume, three-dimensional contour line drawings, and landscape painting are also introduced.
