At PMFS, our librarian and library curriculum help instill a passion for learning and a love of language in our students. All students at Plymouth Meeting Friends School, pre-k through sixth grade, have library as a designated class time on a weekly basis.
The library curriculum at PMFS supports the educational goals of the entire school community. Through their engagement in library, PMFS students develop and practice literacy skills, research skills, ability to interpret and appreciate literature, intellectual freedom, critical thinking skills, technology skills, and collaborative learning. The library curriculum empowers students with the ability to access and process information efficiently and effectively. Students are taught ethical behavior in the use of information, as well as critical and competent evaluation of information. Through literature-based learning, students are presented with new ideas and varying points of view.
Our librarian also empowers and supports our faculty through collaboration on thematic units of study, and by seeking out and recommending new sources to support their teaching.
In addition to regularly scheduled library time and instruction, the library is open at all times during the school day so that students and faculty have unlimited access to the librarian, on-line resources, and the library collection. PMFS students are encouraged to pursue information related to their personal interests and are instilled with a sense of responsibility and ownership in regard to the library and library collection.
