At Plymouth Meeting Friends School, teachers center their curricula around themes that are the jumping off place for interdisciplinary study. Each grade level teacher structures social studies activities around one or more topics during the year and integrates the study of literature and math into this study. The classroom themes are also incorporated into the science curriculum and lend subject matter to art and music. Beginning in third grade, students engage in research projects that are theme-related. Field trips are an integral part of a PMFS education and are frequently linked to the classroom theme as well.
With a thematic approach to curriculum, children are able to develop an understanding of the natural interrelationships of disciplines. Students at Plymouth Meeting Friends School learn about the world, its people, and their place in the ever widening circle of their experience -- classroom, school, neighborhood, city, country, and the world.
